Add Multiple Languages to Your Studio Project

What Is It?

Studio's multilingual authoring capabilities allow you to create learning experiences that support multiple languages. Authors can enable additional languages, manually enter translated content, and upload translated closed captions for AI-generated videos. Learners can then access the experience in their preferred language, either through automatic browser-language detection or by selecting a language from the available options.

As an author, multilingual support allows you to deliver a single learning experience to a broader audience without creating and maintaining separate projects for each language. By managing translations within the same project, you can keep content aligned across regions, simplify updates, and ensure learners receive a consistent experience regardless of language. This helps reduce administrative overhead while making your training more accessible and effective for global audiences.

How to Add Multiple Languages to Your Studio Project

Studio supports multilingual projects by allowing you to manually create content in multiple languages. Follow the steps below to add and edit translations.

Enable Additional Languages

  1. Open your project in Studio.

  2. Click the Settings icon in the top navigation bar.

3. On the General tab, scroll down to Supported Languages.

4. From the drop-down menu, select the language(s) you want to include in your project.

Translate Your Content

  1. Return to the wireflow and open the activity you want to translate.

  2. Select the text element you want to edit.

  3. In the top navigation bar, use the Language drop-down to choose the language you want to update.

⚠️ Note: When you first switch languages, the content will still appear in English. Studio does not automatically translate content—all translations must be entered manually.

4. Replace the English text with your translated content. For example, if you select Japanese, update all applicable text fields with the Japanese translation.

5. Click Save when you've finished editing.

Repeat these steps for each activity and each supported language.

Upload Translated Closed Captions for AI Videos

If your learning experience includes AI-generated video, you can provide translated closed captions for learners in supported languages. While the video audio will always remain in English, the closed captions can be translated and displayed in other languages.

  1. Open the video and click Edit.

  2. Select the appropriate language from the language dropdown at the top of the page.

  3. Download the English .vtt caption file.

  4. Open the .vtt file and replace the English caption text with your translated text

  5. Save the translated file as a .vtt.

  6. Click the + icon to upload your translated .vtt file.

5. Click Save to apply your changes.

Note: You must upload a separate translated .vtt file for each supported language.

Tip: If you do not already have an English .vtt file, you can generate one by clicking the CC button on the video. Download the generated caption file, translate the caption text, save the file as a .vtt, and then upload it for the appropriate language.

IMPORTANT: If you modify the video transcript and generate audio in a different language, that audio will be played for all learners, regardless of their language selection. For this reason, we recommend keeping the audio in your primary language and using translated closed captions to support additional languages.

Preview Your Translations

  1. Click Preview to launch your project.

  2. Use the language drop-down to switch between available languages and verify that your translations display correctly.

Tips

  1. Supported languages must be enabled in Settings before they can be edited.

  2. Translations are managed independently, so changes made in one language will not automatically update other languages.

  3. Remember to save your changes after editing each language.

When learners launch the learning experience, their preferred language is automatically detected based on their browser settings.

  • If the browser's language is one of the supported languages for the learning experience, the learning experience will automatically load in that language.

  • If the browser's language is not supported, the experience will default to the primary learning experience language.

On log-in, learners can use the Language drop-down menu to switch between any of the languages available for the learning experience.


FAQ

Can Studio automatically translate my content?

No. Studio does not provide automatic translation. All translated content must be entered manually for each supported language.

What happens when I add a new language to my project?

When you enable a new language, Studio creates a separate version of your content for that language. Initially, all content will appear in the project's default language until you manually replace it with translated text.

Do I need to translate every activity?

Yes. Each activity, screen, question, and text element must be translated individually. Content that is not translated will continue to display in the original language.

Will updates made in English automatically update my translations?

No. Languages are managed independently. If you change content in English after translations have been created, you must manually update the translated versions as well.

What content cannot currently be translated?

At this time, certain system-generated interface elements cannot be translated. This includes:

  • Interface buttons and navigation elements (such as Resources, Bios, and Network Map)

  • Footer content, including Round labels and other system-generated navigation text

Support for translating additional interface elements will be added in a future release.

Can learners switch languages during the learning experience?

No. Learners cannot switch between any languages once they have selected their language at the start of the experience.

How is a learner's language selected when they launch the experience?

Studio automatically detects the learner's browser language settings. If that language is supported by the learning experience, the experience will launch in that language automatically.

What happens if a learner's browser language is not supported?

The learning experience will load in the project's primary language. Learners can then select a different supported language from the Language drop-down menu.

Are AI-generated videos translated automatically?

No. AI-generated video audio remains in English. If you want learners to view captions in another language, you must create and upload translated closed caption (.vtt) files for each supported language.

Can I translate AI video audio into other languages?

Yes. You can create AI videos with audio in a language other than English. However, each video supports only a single audio track, regardless of the language selected by the learner.

For multilingual learning experiences, the video audio will remain the same for all learners, while the closed captions can be translated and will update based on the language selected in the language drop-down menu.

Support for multiple audio tracks and automatic audio language switching is planned for a future release.

Do I need a separate .vtt file for each language?

Yes. Each language requires its own translated .vtt file that matches the video's script.

What file format is required for translated captions?

Translated captions must be uploaded as a .vtt (WebVTT) file.

Why do I still see English text after switching languages?

When a language is first enabled, Studio copies the content from the default language. You must manually replace the text with translated content and save your changes.

Can I preview my translations before publishing?

Yes. Use the Preview option and switch between available languages using the Language drop-down menu to verify your translations.

Is there a limit to how many languages I can add?

Language availability depends on the languages supported by Studio. Any language available in the Supported Languages setting can be added to your project.

What should I do if some content appears untranslated?

Verify that:

  • The language is enabled in Project Settings.

  • The content has been manually translated and saved.

  • You are viewing the correct language in Preview.

  • Any video captions have been uploaded for the selected language.

What is the best workflow for managing translations?

Many authors find it helpful to:

  1. Complete all content in the primary language first.

  2. Enable additional languages.

  3. Translate and review one language at a time.

  4. Use Preview to verify each language before publishing.

  5. Revisit translations whenever source content changes.
