Relationship Management

Show participants the intended and unintended impact of their decisions on internal and external relationships.

Network Map Feedback

Purpose: The map provides visual feedback to participant to help them explore how their decisions impact the strength of their relationships. Participants typically visit this dynamic display at the completion of each round, and to bring the Network Map alive, ensure facilitators properly debrief it.

How to interpret the map

  • ‘You’ (i.e., the participant/team) is at the center of the diagram

  • Internal or External stakeholders (chosen by the designer) dynamically shift closer to or further from 'You' as a result of the answer choices made throughout the rounds.

  • The closer a stakeholder’s icon is in relation to 'You', the stronger the connection.

  • The green or red number indicates the change in connection strength from round to round.

  • Connections move closer to (green) or further from (red) the center, indicating changes in the relationship strength round-to-round.

    • From a scoring standpoint:

      • negative connections are on the outer ring (negative numbers)

      • neutral (0) connections on the middle ring (zero)

      • positive connections are on the inner ring (positive numbers)

💡 TIP Include a Network Map in your simulation to promote systemic thinking and encourage balance amongst stakeholder relationships.

How to Set Up a Network Map

#1 - Adding the template to the Nav Bar

#2 Editing the Map

Before editing the map, you'll want to have the following defined and set up:

  • Connections:

    • name/title for each connection

    • position/role for each connection

    • asset (image) for each connection (typically an avatar icon provided)

    • description for each connection (maximum ~20-25 words)

      • TIP: Make sure the connections are relevant to the storyline in your course, the roles of the participants, and your organization!

  • Metrics:

    • Set up one metric in the scoring model for each connection

      • Go here to learn how to set up metrics in your scoring model!

  • Optional Qualitative Feedback:

    • Positive feedback text for each connection (maximum ~40-45 words)

    • Negative feedback text for each connection (maximum ~40-45 words)

    • Neutral feedback text for each connection (maximum ~40-45 words)

Scoring a Network Map

Connect scores to outputs to make impacts visible! Participant decisions generate an impact value, which is used to calculate the distance a stakeholder is from the center ('You').

💡 TIP: As you select activities, consider how the impact value of an activity could be used to calculate the distance of various stakeholders in the Network Map.

Each Connection in your map will need its own metric set up in the scoring model. This allows you to connect the metric variable to the stakeholder within the map, and dynamically shift their position, in relation to 'You', as decisions are made.

Scoring the Impacts

Each answer choice or action has a positive, neutral, or negative effect on the 2-15+ Stakeholders and needs an assigned value that directly links the degree of impact of participant decisions on the stakeholder.

We suggest keeping the values simple:

Next, input the values in your scoring model in the same way you score other metrics.

  • To learn how to set up a metric, go here:

  • The score for each relationship is dynamically displayed on the map to learners as the cumulative “impact” of every decision made along with its associated weighted values.

    • negative connections are on the outer ring (negative numbers)

    • neutral (0) connections on the middle ring (zero)

    • positive connections are on the inner ring (positive numbers)

  • Note: If you notice a lack of character movement on the map (after you have created and scored a metric for each character) - chances are your assigned scores are too low and/or there aren't enough decisions to move the characters (e.g. you only have 1 or 2 activities). To resolve, you can assign them larger numbers/scores (ex. instead of 1, 2 or 3, update to 3, 5, or 7), and you should see more movement.

Last, connect the stakeholder's metric variable to the stakeholder within the map.
